Hi,
Do you think that there will be women dress like the contributors and models in http://www.wickedweasel.com in Singapore's beaches in the future?

I honestly do not know the answer... but in radio/audio communications, it is better to say "Fox-2" then "Fired a Sidewinder at the enemy"..... so I am not surprised that the pilots and controllers routinely used certain codes for certain task...
hell, I won't be surprised if there is a "NATO" code which we follow to ensure cross operativity (spelling?)....

Hi,
Our G550 is based on a commercial platform too! Based on the Gulfstream G550! :)
So the "platform" operating cost of the G550, smaller platform, smaller engines should be much lower then the wedgetail.
I don't think we really know how much it cost to maintain the G550's avioics vs the wedgetail's...
I can imagine the wedgetails having longer enduration probably... not just in terms of endurance/loiter time, but also crew endurance... it is a bigger a/c and probably have more space for crew to skretch and rest... and can maybe even have spare crews to rotate.....
I can't imagine that there will be much space in the G550 after putting in all the avionics.. it will be more spacious then a E2C probably, but still cramp.
With more operators, can probably handle more scenarios and with greater internal room, maybe more room for upgrades later on??

Hi,
Do you think that Singapore should send a naval task force to Somalia? Maybe divert the LST currently deployed in the Gulf to that area. I think the 76mm Oto Melera gun is ample to deal with pirates armed with AKs and RPGs
I wonder why this is even remaining a 'problem'.... with all these publicity.... why isn't anyone doing anything about it....

The M4 is suppose to be an interim solution for the US... the ultimate aim is that futuristic OCSW or something.... the hybrid weapon which shoot grenades and a small caliber direct fire weapon....
interestingly.. the malaysian armed forces is ordering 14,000 units, that is not enough to equip the entire armed forces...

It is interesting that some people here can consider using NSFs to run a Carrier Air Wing!
Think about it... the PRC really wanted a a/c carrier... and they have to buy hulks from Russia to 'study' and analyze and right now they didn't have a single carrier...
even the russians only have 1 a/c carrier.....

Actually, realistically.... if any country tries to harass shipping in the straits of malacca... they can expect strong response from powers such as the US, Japan etc... and maybe even the PRC!
These countries have as much at stake as Singapore in keeping our SLOCs open.
even if there are these non-conventional threats.... it will probbaly be mining or speed-boats... kind of like the Iranian Revolutionary Guards....
I wonder how a a/c carrier could deal with mines and speed boats...

enough of singapore and aircraft carrier discussion.. those two terms should not even be used in the same sentence...
Below is the list of countries operating a/c carriers... notice how few there are? and how many countries with larger GDPs and defence priorities, Iseral, South Korea, Taiwan etc etc... are not on the list!
even australia is not operating a/c carriers....
we recently tranistioned from a brown water navy to a force that operate 6x FFGs! and that is a huge milestone already....
and you don't need an a/c carrier to fight pirates, a few PVs with a 76mm gun is more then sufficient......

I think the plan was to store in Guam or something.... to be transported to Singapore in an emergency...
as when the purchase was made the isn't any country in SEA that has this sort of capability.
However, after RMAF bought long range missile for their MIG29, the AMRAAM was released and I would presume that they are now stored in Singapore.

actually 20 years ago, we bought the 4x F16A and 4x F16B...at that time, it was a 'breakthrough' to be operating such advanced jet....
who would expect in 2008 that the RSAF annouce that we are operating F15!!! which is supposed sooo expensive with 2x F100 engine each consuming twice the amount of aviation fuel as the F16!
I think by the time the squadron pilots flying the F35 are probably still in primary school, we will surely be one of the last buyers of F35!

Hi,
I think it is possible that the F16A/B that we gifted to RTAF is more capable then the upgraded F5S.
The F5 upgrade is on the radar and avionics.... there is no engine or airframe upgrade. It is likely to be quite old in terms of airframe hours and is still powered by an underpowered J85 engine....
However, we have >40 of them....and replacing them at one go would be difficult.
we only have 7 F16A/B and have a much larger number of F16C/D. It makes sense to get rid of the A/B to standardize our F16 fleet... the RTAF have F16A/B which means they can be standize too...

I think when the F-35 come on-line, some of the earlier F16 will probably be retired. maybe only the newer 145 SQN F16D+ with the CFT will remain.
F16D+ - about 20
F15 - 24
F-35 - 100
total 144 a/c... about the same as the 2010 total.
